It is with love and sadness that we announce the passing of David Loughlen Smith on July 7, 2026, at the age of 93.
David was born on December 1, 1932, in West Chester, Pennsylvania, and was raised in London, Ontario. From an early age, he developed a lifelong passion for aviation, learning to fly alongside his father. That love of flying remained with him throughout his life and was one of his greatest joys.
David began his career in the insurance adjusting business, a profession that brought him to Toronto to assist with the aftermath of Hurricane Hazel. It was there that he met the love of his life, Jeanne. Their meeting marked the beginning of a remarkable partnership, and together they shared 70 wonderful years of marriage filled with love, laughter, and unwavering devotion.
David later transitioned his career into the field of sports medicine, where he became a pioneer in supplying sports medicine products to professional sports teams, colleges, and universities across North America. He took great pride in helping athletes and medical professionals through his work, building lasting relationships throughout the industry.
David and Jeanne eventually made their home in Nobleton, Ontario, where they created countless cherished memories with family and friends. He especially enjoyed the camaraderie and good times shared with the Nobleton Oldtimers, whose friendships meant so much to him over the years.
Family was at the heart of David's life. He treasured summers spent at the family cottage on Kahshe Lake, where days were filled with boating, laughter, and time with those he loved most.
David also found great enjoyment on the golf course throughout his life. In retirement, David and Jeanne enjoyed wintering in Florida, where David happily worked on a golf course, combining his love of golf, the outdoors, and the friendships he made there.
His last chapter led David and Jeanne to the community of Pine Ridge in Gravenhurst where they established wonderful new friendships. He enjoyed 15 years in the home that he loved, surrounded by these incredible, supportive friends.
David had a wonderful sense of humour and a genuine gift for making people smile. He loved to drive, whether heading out on a road trip, visiting family and friends, or simply enjoying the journey. His adventurous spirit, easy laugh, and positive outlook on life made him a pleasure to be around.
David will be deeply missed by his beloved wife of 70 years, Jeanne; his daughter, Kelly (Greg); his son, Mark (Isabelle), his treasured grandchildren, Allegra, Ariane, and Xavier, his brother Jim (Lisa) and sister Susie (Peter). He was predeceased by his sister, Beverly.
David will be remembered for his love of family, his passion for aviation, his dedication to his work, and the many friendships he cultivated throughout his long and fulfilling life. His kindness, warmth, generosity, and quiet strength will remain in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.
He always had a story or a joke to tell and lived his life with humour and gratitude. His legacy lives on in the family he cherished and the many lives he touched. He will be greatly missed and lovingly remembered always.
Our family is deeply grateful for the kind, compassionate, and loving care provided by the staff at Andy's House Hospice in Port Carling during David's final days.
A Celebration of David's Life will be held on Saturday, September 19, 2026, from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. at Hahne Hall, 16 Hedgewood Lane (Pine Ridge Recreation Centre), Gravenhurst, Ontario.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations to Andy's House Hospice would be sincerely appreciated in David's memory.
