It is with love and fond memories that we announce the passing of Dorothy Elizabeth Ann Strachan (née Dunsmore), beloved wife of the late James Joseph Strachan.
Dorothy was born on May 14, 1931, in Barrie, Ontario, to Cecil and Viola (Profit) Dunsmore. She spent her childhood growing up on the family farm in Crown Hill, where she developed the strength, determination, and resilience that would become such defining parts of her character throughout her life.
Dorothy was a proud mother to Debbie (Steve) Waite and Stephen Strachan, and a cherished grandmother to Cheri (Matt MacBride) Buie, Penny (Geoff Hines) Waite, and Ashley (George) Montgomery. Her greatest joy was her family, and she was blessed with five great-grandchildren: Nolan and Mason Buie, and Nash, Atlas, and Angus Montgomery, who brought her so much happiness.
Dorothy was predeceased by her beloved husband, Jim, and her siblings Leonard, Douglas, Helen, Norval (Bud), and Barbara Jane.
If there were a few words to describe Dorothy, they would be saucy, stubborn, resilient, spirited, funny, loving, and kind. She was a strong and proud woman with a heart of gold, fiercely dedicated to the people she loved. She had a wonderful sense of humour, a determined spirit, and a way of making sure everyone around her felt included, welcomed, and cared for. Dorothy was always thinking of others, quietly making sure everyone had what they needed and that no one was left out.
She was a woman who loved keeping busy and trying new things. Over the years, her many interests included sewing, knitting, crafting, snowmobiling, cross-country skiing, euchre, and shuffleboard. In her later years, she especially enjoyed carpet and lawn bowling, Bingo (particularly when she won chocolate bars!), and Arts & Crafts at Castle Peak. One thing that never changed was her love of the outdoors. Nothing would stop Dorothy from getting out for her daily walk—not rain, snow, or even temperatures of 20 below!
Dorothy was also deeply involved in her community and faith. She devoted many years to the United Church in Gravenhurst, beginning as a Sunday School teacher and always lending a helping hand wherever she was needed. She spent countless hours knitting and sewing beautiful items for the annual Christmas Bazaar and was an active member of the United Church Women’s group. She was also involved with the Order of the Eastern Star. Her faith was
reflected not only in her involvement with these organizations but, more importantly, in her genuine commitment to helping others.
Some of Dorothy's happiest memories were made with family and friends. She loved camping, beginning with tent camping adventures with her children and eventually enjoying a seasonal trailer at Pembrook Resort, where she treasured spending summers with her granddaughters. She was a fantastic cook and baker who loved hosting family gatherings and celebrations in her home. Her double chocolate cherry cookies will forever hold a special place in the hearts of those lucky enough to enjoy them. And who could forget picking strawberries together to make homemade pies and strawberry jam—with plenty of sugar, of course!
Dorothy's home was a place of warmth, good food, laughter, and togetherness. She had a gift for bringing people together and making ordinary moments special. Whether through a home-cooked meal, a handmade gift, a shared game, or simply making sure everyone was included, she showed her love through the little things that often meant the most.
Dorothy leaves behind a legacy of strength, generosity, laughter, and love. She taught those around her the importance of family, community, hard work, resilience, and making the most of every day. Her spirited nature, quick wit, stubborn determination, and enormous heart will be deeply missed but never forgotten.
In keeping with Dorothy's generous spirit, those wishing to honour her memory may consider making a donation to one of the following organizations:
