Gordon Douglas Patterson, more affectionately remembered as “Doug”, passed away peacefully at Andy’s House – Hospice Muskoka on Friday, May 15, 2026. Beloved husband of 70 years to Katharine Patterson.
Doug was the beloved father of Shawn Patterson and Leanne McCann (Stewart). Proud grandfather of Ryan McCann (Qian) and Nathan McCann. The great-grandfather of Elijah McCann.
Doug was born on August 22, 1933, in Dundalk, Ontario, to parents Oscar and Ada Patterson. He was raised on a farm with five siblings.
Doug and Katharine married in 1956 and raised their two children in Toronto. In 1972, they bought a cottage property on Ril Lake and spent many summers and winters there. This was Doug’s love. Being in Muskoka, sitting on the dock, or a good swim in the lake.
Doug and Katharine moved later to Muskoka after retirement from Bell Canada in 1989, after having a number of positions. He started as a linesman and then moved into sales management. He won many sales achievement awards throughout his career. There wasn’t anything that Doug couldn’t sell. He was a smooth talker. At the time, he also ran a farmers’ market in Carnarvon in the Haliburton area.
He loved to collect antiques and loved a good auction sale, and this precipitated Past & Present antique business in 1990, which he really never retired from. After closing the antique business in 2004, he and Katharine moved to Doe Lake. This is where he started his gardening career and his love for volunteering. He gave many years to Habitat for Humanity, Salvation Army, OPP, and Bracebridge Hospital, helping wherever there was a need.
Doug will be remembered as a hardworking and thoughtful man. He was involved in his community in many different ways and was always ready to lend a helping hand.
In following Doug’s wishes, cremation has taken place, and no funeral will be held. A private family celebration will be held at a later date. Memorial donations made to Andy’s House – Hospice Muskoka would be appreciated and may be arranged online or through Cavill Funeral Home.
