Harriet “Nan” Anne Allen passed away at Andy's House-Hospice Muskoka on Sunday, July 19, 2026, just before her 95" birthday. She was born on July 28, 1931, in North Sydney, Nova Scotia, to parents Catherine and Arthur Allen.

She leaves behind many nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews, as well as many other extended family members. She was predeceased by her siblings, Joan Reardon, Pauline Marr, Mary-Lou Gemmell, Margaret McMullen, Frances Bate, and Donny Allen, and dearest friend Mavis Legris.

Harriet spent most of her working career as a registered nurse. She started at Cornwall Nursing School, and her career took her to many different places around the province. She eventually settled in Bala, where she called home for the rest of her life. She truly immersed herself in this little community. If there was an event taking place in town, she was involved. It didn't matter if it was curling, cross-country skiing, coaching hockey, the Cranberry Festival, or the Bethlehem Trek, she was there and ready to be involved. She was very community driven, including being part of the Bala Volunteer Fire Department for many years, and her dedication did not go unnoticed. She was awarded The Ontario Medal for Good Citizenship, an award for being a citizen of outstanding merit and behavior that exemplifies the qualities of good citizenship. In 2017, she also won a Certificate of Appreciation for her hard work and volunteerism within her community. Nan was an integral member of the Roman Catholic Community at St. James the Great Parish in Mac Tier and she especially loved St. Anne's church on Fenn's Point, where she adorned the altar with fresh flowers every week, which was one of her great joys.

A heartfelt thank-you to her friends near and far, who helped in any way they could. The Bala community truly came together for Harriet throughout her life, until the very end.

A Memorial visitation will take place at Cavill Funeral Home on Tuesday, July 28, 2026, from 6:00 – 8:00 pm, with a Memorial Mass taking place at 1:00 pm the following day at St. Anne’s Church, Bala. A reception to celebrate Nan’s life will be held in Bala following the mass. Details for the celebration will be published shortly.
