Helen passed away peacefully on Monday, June 9th, at South Muskoka Memorial Hospital in Bracebridge.
Helen was the beloved wife of the late William “Bill” Flavell, who predeceased her in 2021. She was a devoted mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and friend, and leaves behind a legacy of love, compassion, and service.
She will be deeply missed by her five children, thirteen grandchildren, and ten great-grandchildren:
Helen is lovingly remembered by her brothers Clarence Farmer (late Carol) and Ernie Farmer (Debby), as well as her many nieces and nephews, cousins and her extended family of brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law.
Helen was predeceased by her parents, her husband Bill, and her brother John Farmer and his wife Joanne.
Helen lived a life of kindness and community involvement. She enjoyed crocheting, knitting, reading, solving sudoku puzzles, and playing Scrabble. She was a dedicated volunteer with the Gravenhurst Seniors’ Centre, the Anglican Church, and the Girl Guides of Canada, where she served as a leader and longtime District Commissioner. Helen directed comedy shows at the church and Seniors’ Centre, sang in the Elderberry Choir, made costumes for plays, and sewed bibs for nursing homes. She also volunteered in the hospital gift shop.
Together with her beloved husband Bill, Helen fostered 31 children over the years, opening their hearts and home to those in need. The couple was known for their warm and accepting nature, and their generous spirit touched countless lives.
After Bill’s passing, Helen moved to the Alexander Muskoka Residence, where she quickly became part of a vibrant community and formed close friendships. Her family is grateful for the exceptional care she received there.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Helen’s memory can be made to the South Muskoka Hospital Foundation (CCU) https://www.healthmuskoka.ca/donate/.
The family would like to extend heartfelt thanks to the staff and caregivers at the Alexander Muskoka Residence, and to the nurses and doctors of the Critical Care Unit at South Muskoka Memorial Hospital, including Dr. N. Virendranath and Dr. Luke Wu, for their compassion and attentive care during Helen’s final days.
She will be dearly missed and lovingly remembered.
A Memorial Service will be held at 1:00pm on July 12, 2025 at St. James Anglican Church, Gravenhurst, ON.
