John Patrick Maynard Jr. (affectionately known as Johnny Jr. to his family) passed away peacefully, after a long illness, at Andy’s House - Hospice Muskoka on Sunday, April 12, 2026, at the age of 68. He was born in Toronto on December 15, 1957, to parents John Maynard Sr. and the late Mary Maynard (nee Young).
Lovingly remembered by his Nephew Brett and niece Jacquie, as well as many cousins from Toronto: the late Mike (Marg), Ron (Cathy), Andrew (Leona), Chris, Martina (Kevin), Ryan, Justin, Donna, Michelle and her family.
Predeceased by his step mother Winsome Maynard and remembered by her family, late brothers Bert (Marie), Robert (Ilona), predeceased by his adoring aunt Mary (Steve), and Uncle Eddie (Ellie). He was also predeceased by his devoted grandmother Rose Maynerick.
John will be missed by his dear friend Ron Knifton who helped him so much through his illness. It was such a blessing for John to have such a great friend.
John attended Sir Robert Borden High School in Scarborough. After a number of years as a member of the Royal Canadian Sea Cadets he began his career in the Canadian Coast Guard, serving 35 years. He served the majority of his career on the CCGS Samuel Risley navigating the Great Lakes.
After retirement, John bought a house in Gravenhurst and his beloved dog Bailey entered his life. Bailey brought John so much joy and happiness. They were true companions. John and Bailey drove to Scarborough most weekends to visit his dad where they routinely went to Swiss Chalet. John spent wonderful times in Toronto with his cousins for many birthday and holiday. celebrations.
John loved his retirement time in Gravenhurst. He formed many lasting friendships at the dog park with both humans and canines. He was always surrounded by many wonderful friends and neighbours who were very kind and helpful to him in so many ways.
Ron says, ‘John was happy with his life and never expressed regret or envy about anything. He was someone who enjoyed each day and was comfortable in his own skin. A good man with a kind heart—“A good shipmate”’
John recently made a profession of faith and is now at peace in the arms of Jesus in his eternal home in heaven.
Many thanks to the caring staff at Andy’s House in Port Carling and the staff at South Muskoka Memorial Hospital.
A celebration of life will be held in late spring.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Andy’s House or the Canadian Cancer Society in memory of John.
