On September 21, 2025, surrounded by the love of her family, Kanatí:res (Grace) Franks (née Beauvais) began her next journey, passing peacefully at home in Wáhta at the age of 97. Her life was woven together with love, dedication, and an unwavering spirit.
Born on July 30, 1928, in Kanehsatáke, Quebec, Grace was the cherished daughter of the late Josephine Gabriel and Angus Beauvais. She was a loving sister to her siblings, Edna, Joe, Mary, Freda, Emily, Stuart, Michael, Nellie, and Linda who have all since passed, as well as her surviving sisters, Mina and Nancy.
Grace dedicated her life to her community and family. She approached every task with a hardworking and meticulous spirit, whether as a dutiful student, a detail-oriented cranberry sorter, or a devoted Kanienkéha Language teacher. Her passion for teaching was a true joy, and she continued to share her knowledge and love for the language well into her 90s, even living and working at the Tyendinaga Language Nest with her sister, Mina at 87 years old.
A vibrant and active member of her community, Grace was a familiar face at every event, Elder's conference, and BINGO or Euchre game. She found immense joy in socializing, singing with the drum group, and sharing stories over a cup of tea with friends and family.
In 1947, Grace married the late Mitchell Oliver Franks from Wáhta in a ceremony in Kanehstáke. Together, they built a beautiful family, raising five children: the late Peter (Beverley), the late Irvine (Jane), Philip (Sandra), Ellen (Guy), and Carol (Bart). They eventually made Wáhta their home. Grace was a loving grandmother to 10 grandchildren—Ian (late), Rachel, Adam, Kyla, Laurel, Evan, Sean, Melissa, Jack, and Olivia—and a proud great-grandmother to Jordana, William, and Elijah, each of whom brought her immense happiness.
While we grieve her physical absence, we can find comfort in knowing that her loving spirit now walks with those who have gone before her. She lived a full and well loved life, touching the hearts of all who knew her.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, September 24, 2025, from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m., with a memorial service on Thursday September 25, 2025 at 11 a.m.. Both will take place at the Wáhta Church, with a reception to follow at the Wáhta Mohawks Administration Building. All are welcome to join in celebrating Grace's beautiful and cherished life.
