It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Martin Bjorn Madden on November 12, 2025, at the age of 71.
Born in Ottawa on February 17, 1954, Martin was predeceased by his parents, John J. Madden and Andrea S. Madden (née Ingaldson), and by his beloved older brother, Sean. He is lovingly remembered by his dear son, Julian Haayen-Madden, his siblings Andrea Horsley, Signy Madden, and Thorburn Madden, and by his nieces and nephews: Solveig, Keira, Bryna, Emma, Alida, and Magnus.
During Martin’s childhood, his father’s academic career moved the family to several cities in England and Ontario before they made their home in Guelph. The Madden family embarked on many memorable adventures—travelling throughout Europe and across North America in their ’67 Pontiac Parisienne and tent trailer, which accompanied them across the ocean on ships like the QE2. Other summers were spent in Manitoba, visiting the family cottage in Gimli and spending time with their extended family in Winnipeg.
Martin’s career was defined by his time working in the box office at the Royal Alexandra Theatre in Toronto and as a Library Assistant at the University of Guelph. A prolific and erudite reader, Martin had a remarkable memory and a deep love of history, music, theatre, and literature.
Martin approached the world with curiosity, intelligence, and kindness. He was known for his wry humour, calm presence, and a personal style all his own. You could always spot Martin in a crowd by his natty combinations—funky glasses, paisley scarves, cool socks, and bright shoes. His aesthetic sense was an extension of his character: thoughtful, funny, and open-minded.
He adored his cats, enjoyed cooking, and held a special and loving bond with his mother, Andrea, and his son, Julian.
