Michael Ross Johnston passed away peacefully on June 22, 2026, at Muskoka Shores Care Community in Gravenhurst, Ontario, at the age of 73.
Born in Weston, Ontario on June 11, 1953, Michael lived a life marked by dedication to family, hard work, and a deep appreciation for the outdoors.
Michael was the beloved husband of Mary Lou (Perry), with whom he shared a lifetime of love and partnership. He was a proud and loving father to Matthew Ross, and a cherished grandfather to Jack Ross, who brought him immense joy—especially as Michael faithfully cheered him on at hockey games.
He will be dearly missed by his siblings, Bruce and Sharon (Dawe), as well as by his many nieces, nephews, and great-nieces and great-nephews. Michael was predeceased by his parents, Murray Ross Johnston and Mary (Renton).
Michael was a man who found happiness in simple pleasures. He loved spending time outdoors and had a natural talent for woodworking and building. A dedicated and hardworking individual, he was a Grade 13 graduate with honours. He built a long and respected career in the printing industry before following his passion for construction. In 1997–1998, he built the family home, later opening his own construction company, where he went on to build homes and complete renovations for many in his community.
A devoted sports fan, Michael especially enjoyed watching his grandson Jack play hockey. He was a lifelong supporter of the Toronto Maple Leafs and could often be found cheering on the Toronto Blue Jays. Over the years, he also shared a special bond with the many dogs he loved and cared for.
Michael will be remembered for his quiet strength, his craftsmanship, and his unwavering love for his family.
In memory of Michael, donations may be made to the Alzheimer Society of Canada.
