Richard Gilmor Colwell, affectionately known as Dick, passed away peacefully on January 4, 2024 at South Muskoka Memorial Hospital in Bracebridge, Ontario.  He was in his 90th year. Dick is survived by Cecelia, his loving wife of more than fifty years. He was pre-deceased by his wife June (nee Ramsay) in 1972.

Dick was the loving, devoted, and supporting father of Kim (Bruce), Cherie, John, Rick (Lynn), Robyn (David), Andrew (Richard), and Tracy.  He was a much-loved brother and uncle, and he took enormous pride in his many grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Anyone who ever met Dick knows he was the definition of the word gentleman.  His trademark smile, his open heart, his compassionate manner, and his quiet sense of humour touched everyone he met.  Growing up in New Brunswick, Dick loved the outdoors.  He loved traveling, scuba diving, and cross country skiing – and he loved a fast sports car.  Dick and Cecelia retired to Muskoka, a place they both loved, in 2000.  There they became active in many community projects, associations, and volunteer initiatives.

In addition to his unique devotion to his family, Dick was an exceptional businessman.  He spent more than fifty years in the fine paper industry.  A hallmark of his leadership was his dedication to his people.  Dick was not just a boss, he was a friend.  His motto was “Be a leader”

and he enjoyed mentoring individuals and teams to achieve that goal.  Dick was a hands-on manager who never hesitated to roll up his sleeves to get the job done.

Following Dick’s wishes, cremation has taken place.  A private family graveside service will also take place in Oakville, Ontario this spring.  In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the South Muskoka Hospital Foundation at https://www.healthmuskoka.ca/donate or to a charity of your choice.  Cecelia would like to thank and acknowledge the outstanding team at South Muskoka Memorial Hospital for their kindness to Dick in his final days.

“Life and love go on.  Let the music play.”
