It is with heavy hearts that the family of Rita Clara Barnes (née Stothers) announce her passing at South Muskoka Memorial Hospital on Saturday, October 3, 2026, following injuries sustained in a fall.
Rita was born in Gravenhurst, Ontario, on December 30, 1938. A woman of remarkable strength, determination, and unwavering love for her family, Rita lived a life filled with hard work, devotion, and countless cherished memories.
Rita was the beloved wife of the late Myrle Barnes, who predeceased her in 2005. She was a loving and devoted mother to the late Terry Barnes, Dennis and Donna Barnes, the late Danny Barnes, and Gary and Stephanie Barnes and dear mother-in-law to Marylin Barnes.
She will be lovingly remembered by her grandchildren, Shannon Smith, Amanda Cleavely, Daniel, Jonathan, Jake, Garrett, and Tyler, as well as by her 15 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild, all of whom brought her tremendous pride and joy.
Rita is survived by her brothers, David Stothers and Mark Stothers. She was predeceased by her siblings Roberta, Leonard, Joan, Ralph, Glen, Sheila, and Billy.
Those who knew Rita will remember her as a woman who was honest, outspoken, and fiercely independent. She never hesitated to tell you exactly what she thought, whether you asked for her opinion or not, but it was always delivered from a place of love and genuine care. Her ability to persevere through life's greatest hardships, including the loss of her husband Myrle and her sons Terry and Danny, was a true testament to her strength, resilience, and character.
Rita spent her working years in a variety of roles throughout the community, including time at Muskoka Centre, before concluding her career at Gravenhurst Plastics. No matter where she worked, she was known for her hardworking nature and dedication to others.
In her later years, Rita found comfort in life's simple pleasures. She was happiest relaxing with a hot cup of tea while watching her favourite television programs, always accompanied by her two faithful companions and best friends, Bart and Tinkerbell. She also loved cooking and sharing meals with family and friends. At Rita's table, everyone was welcome, and reservations were never required when dinner was ready.
Rita filled the hearts of so many with love, laughter, and lasting memories. She was always there when someone needed help, often putting the needs of others before her own. Her unconditional love, generosity, and caring spirit will be deeply missed and forever remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing her.
A Graveside Service will be held at 11:00 AM on Thursday, October 8, 2026 at Kilworthy Lutheran Cemetery.
As an expression of sympathy, memorial donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Research Foundation in Rita's memory.
"Those we love don't go away; they walk beside us every day, unseen, unheard, but always near; still loved, still missed, and forever dear."
