Susan Alice Heidman

May 19, 1942 — October 6, 2023

Gravenhurst

Susan Alice Heidman passed away peacefully with family by her side on Friday, October 6, 2023, at South Muskoka Memorial Hospital in Bracebridge, at the age of 81 after a brief illness.  She was born in Gravenhurst on May 19, 1942, to parents Alfred and Kathleen (Reader) Nye, and was a twin to Sandra. Predeceased by her loving husband Morley.

Sue will be greatly missed by her sister Janys (late John) Culkeen of Sturgeon Falls. Cherished niece to Audrie (late Bill) Gammon, and family, and she will be fondly remembered by nieces and nephews Natalie (Ed) Crawford, Kelly (Rick) Stronks, Peter Culkeen, Russell (Lynn) Lane, Doug (Barb) Lane and Jim (Sandra) Lane, Wayne (Pauline) Crawford as well as the extended Gardy family in Orillia. Predeceased by her sisters Sandra (Russ) Lane and Shirley (Wayne) Crawford.

On Morley’s side of the family, Sue will be dearly missed by Sisters-in-law Edith Heidman and Thelma McPherson. Loving aunt of Debbie Heidman, Gord McPherson (Laurie), Cheryl Ford (Andy), and Barbara-Jean McPherson. Great aunt to Riley, Kirsten, Christie, Stuart, Alyssa, Norman Jr. Blake, and Mandy. Great-great aunt to Keira and Calvin. Predeceased by brothers-in-law Russell Heidman, Doug Heidman, and Don McPherson.

She married Morley Heidman in 1961, and they began building their house on his family’s farm at the crossroads of Kilworthy Road and Southwood Road.  Although the house was small, they filled it with their love of hospitality and music. Many parties and gatherings were held at their home, and music was a large part of their lives, with Morley playing his fiddle and Sue accompanying him on the piano.  All who knew them knew they could drop by anytime and be made welcome.  She and Morley loved to travel and camp in their motorhome and visited many places across Canada.  She organized many family events, and one of her favourite sayings was “you’ve got to make it happen”.

Sue was a kind and generous person, and this prompted her to befriend many people, driving acquaintances to town for appointments and shopping, and volunteering in the community.  She was a devoted member of the Severn Bridge Women’s Institute for years and took part in many a pie-making bee for their various fundraising events.  She was always cooking and baking, and you never left her table hungry!  She also had her finger on the pulse of what was happening in Kilworthy and Gravenhurst, and you could count on her to bring you up to date with current and family events.  She was also an animal lover who had numerous beloved dogs and cats over the years, as well as a keen nature watcher who enjoyed sharing her observations.

Sue was always an avid walker along the roads of Kilworthy, and during her stay at The Manor, she and her caregiver Ed Gillespie became familiar faces around town as they went on their daily morning walks to Oliver’s Coffee, then down to the Muskoka Wharf.  Nothing could stop her from motoring along with her rollator!

Sue’s family deeply appreciate the wonderful care that the staff at The Manor at Gravenhurst provided for her over the last year and a half, as well as the doctors and nurses during her stay in the hospital.  They are also grateful for Ed’s care of Sue, and the quality of her life that resulted.

A funeral service will be held at Cavill Funeral Home on Saturday, October 14, 2023, with visitation from 10:00-11:00am, and service beginning at 11:00am . In honour of Sue’s memory, donations can be made to the Alzheimer Society or the Ontario SPCA Muskoka Animal Centre
