It is with sadness that we announce the passing of William John “Bill” Hill on Friday, July 11, 2025, at Andy’s House in Port Carling after a brief stay at Granite Ridge Retirement Residence in Gravenhurst. He was in his 96th year. He is predeceased by his beloved wife, Iris (nee Brookbank), and his long-time housemate, Bridget O’Reilly.
Bill is survived by his children, Catherine and Malcolm.
Bill was born in Housey’s Rapids, the second son of the late Eva and Harry Hill. Bill was also predeceased by his older brother Kenneth, who lived in Gravenhurst his entire life and worked as an auto mechanic until his passing in 1985.
Bill joined the army as a teenager, then worked on the boats on the Great Lakes. He also worked briefly on the railroad, before becoming a long-distance truck driver for the rest of his career.
Bill loved his animals and was a devoted pet parent to numerous dogs and cats over the years. He enjoyed nature and military programs on his big screen TV and was a huge fan of the Toronto Blue Jays.
Many thanks to the homecare nurses from Paramed, and the PSWs who cared for Bill in his home in the last years of his life.
Cremation has taken place. Bill will be laid to rest at Mickle Memorial Cemetery in Gravenhurst.
A Celebration of Life will be held downstairs at the Royal Canadian Legion, 290 Veterans Way, Gravenhurst P1P 1K2 on Wednesday, July 30, 2025, from 2:00-4:00pm.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Bracebridge SPCA or Andy’s House – Hospice Muskoka in Port Carling.
