Allan Douglas Abernethy, 1961-2020

Most beloved husband of Lia (Invidiata) and cherished father of Jordan (Matthew Johnston) and AJ. Mourned deeply by his mother, Gloria Hugo, father, Bruce Abernethy (Diane), brothers Bruce Abernethy (Jutta), Blair Abernethy (Caroline) and sister, Julie Dove (Howard). Also dearly missed by his mother-in-law, Elizabeth Invidiata, and brothers-in-law, Mark Invidiata (Gry), Christopher Invidiata, and sister-in-law, Lesley Invidiata. Many uncles, aunts, nieces, nephews, and cousins will miss him as well.

Al grew up in Etobicoke, moved to Bradford and finally to Gravenhurst, steadily moving north with his loving wife Lia. All his life he loved spending as much time as he could with family and friends, and enjoying cottage life from Cedar Point, to Thunder Beach, Lake Huron, Hanover, Port Carling and at the family cottage on Sparrow Lake. Over the years as Al made friends, they tended to become friends for life and shared his interests in snowmobiling, fishing, family, and fun. Neighbours on the road at Sparrow Lake referred to Al as “the mayor” as he always wanted to know what people were up to. It wasn’t because he was nosey, but because he wanted to help anyone with anything they needed. Whether it was turning the heat on for someone coming up that weekend, or repairing broken water lines, Al always had a plan for how to solve a problem and was more than willing to help. He had such a big heart and his family and friends meant the world to him. It was in his actions, and through his generosity, that he showed his love for the people in his life. Al was so proud to be a father to his two children, AJ & Jordan, and he was so excited to become a grandparent to his expectant daughter, Jordan. He was an amazing father, and he would have been the world’s greatest Grandpa. Al left us far too soon, but he leaves behind a family that loves him more than words can describe, and a family that is so strong because of him. His lessons, love and guidance have set them up for a wonderful life, and one they will live out that way to honour his memory.

His family would like to thank all the people who have reached out and supported them in this difficult time. In light of the COVID-19 restrictions, a private family funeral is planned. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Taylor Cup in support of Princess Margaret Cancer Foundation  - an annual charity hockey tournament that took place on Sparrow Lake and that Al has supported and attended for the past 9 years.
