Doris Cooke

September 21, 1934 — July 11, 2022

Bracebridge

Died peacefully on July 11,2022 at Andy’s House in Port Carling.

Mom was the 6th of nine children born Sept. 21,1934 to Blanche and Adam Coulter of Novar, ON.

She was predeceased by siblings Madeline, Barbara, Calvin, Jean, Joseph, and Harvey. Survived by June (Orvill) and Erston (Vivian). She had nine children: Stephen (Terry), Christine (Larry), Milly (Bob), Wilma (Terry), Bill (Sandy), Dee (Les), Dan (Lori), Eva (Barney), and David (Sharron).

Proud grandmother to: Megan, Sara, Caitlyn, Carsen, Bobby, Lisa, Isabel, Alexander, Duane, Wade, Erin, Casey, Allie, Marcy, Chad, Cory, Shae, Janine, Cody, Emma, Maddie, Max, Cole, Chelan, and eight great-grandchildren.

Doris received her education in Novar and Huntsville High. She then moved to Toronto where she met and married the father of her children, Bill Cooke. After moving back to Muskoka, mom worked as a cook at various restaurants while raising 9 brats (her license plate) until she took upgrading at Georgian College and became a counsellor for the mentally challenged at the Muskoka Centre in Gravenhurst. A job she relished for 25 years. She was very proud of having gone back to school to do what she considered to be very worthwhile work. A few years after dad passed away, mom met a gentle giant named Russel Gravestone and they spent 18 wonderful years together, holidaying in Cuba, traveling out west, curling at the Gravenhurst Curling Club and playing bridge, poker and shuffleboard at the Gravenhurst Seniors Centre. Her no-nonsense advice and feistiness will be missed by all of us. Dr. Mittal worked tirelessly to provide mom with dignity and comfort as the end neared.

Special thanks to the wonderful staff at Castle Peak Retirement Home and Andy’s House. Thanks also to the staff at Cavill-Turner Funeral Home for assisting with all arrangements.

As mom requested, there will be no Celebration of Life. A family interment will take place at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Alzheimer Society of Canada would be appreciated.
