Duncan Veitch

June 1, 1987 — March 13, 2021

Gravenhurst

Beloved Son of Pat (Chip) Loughead of Gravenhurst and Jan Veitch (Lori Lyne) of Orillia

The bestest brother to Sam Veitch (Emma Eiter) of Gravenhurst

Dear grandson to Helen and the late Don Holstock of Gravenhurst

and June and the late Don Veitch of Severn Bridge.

Cousin to Maghan O’Connor (Dan O’Connor) who is really a sister in their closeness.

A prince to his great aunt Barbara Bellamy formerly of Toronto.

A beloved nephew to Bob (Gaye), Don (Shannon), Heather (Rick), Jamie (Gloria), Tim (Wanda), Dan (Deb), Ted (Rachel), Wally (Marg) and all his cousins who adored being in his presence.

He will also be deeply missed by devoted puppies Benny and Stella.

Curious, engaging, creative, hilarious and sometimes exasperating, but being in his world was and is a true blessing for the many folks he touched. His kind and nurturing nature was evidenced in all of Duncan’s lifelong relationships. And every dog he ever met was instantly drawn to his warm and gentle soul. A tried and true Samauri Spirit exhibiting benevolence, respect, wisdom, fidelity, loyalty and sincerity. Though he sounds like a saint, he was one of us fallible humans gone too soon.

With his epic grill skills, Dunc found a place in many kitchens: The Cactus, Lakers, Boston Pizza, The Oar & Paddle, Sawdust City Brewery, Taboo and The Frosty Pint. His years of experience led to a position in the Food Services Department in 2018 at BCI (Beaver Creek Institution) Federal Prison where he took pride in supervising and guiding inmates, buying and budget management, and found himself a solid position that secured his future.

While growing up on the edge of Gull Lake Park, Duncan & Sam’s place became the go-to house for anything and everything. Whether for a meal, advice, a campfire, or overnight accommodation, friends were always welcome. Duncan loved the close-knit neighbourhood so much that he bought a house on the same street, and strove to help out his neighbours wherever he was needed. At the annual Gravenhurst winter carnival  Duncan was the coordinator, and he emceed the very successful arm wrestling event for several years. He was also an enthusiastic competitor in the GWC wing-eating contest.

Duncan’s love of music in all genres was contagious. He could be found jamming in the garage during high school, where there were a few guest appearances by OPP officers who often joined in the fun. He was always in his element while strumming his guitar amid a circle of friends. Hand him a microphone and he became a cool affable host, or a karaoke king. He was always stylish and always put together, without a hint of ostentation. Duncan was also a natural athlete adept at many sports. He revelled in his participation on the Lumberkings Men’s League Baseball and Clear Lake Brewing Men’s Hockey League. The golf course, tennis court and snowboarding slopes made both summer and winter his favourite seasons. And he was an exceptionally skilled wordsmith and avid reader, as well as an epic debater who was always open to a challenge, and proficient in the art of making his point!

Oh Duncan, your time with us was far too short. But while you were here, you made our world a far better place. Now on into the mystic light. Send a sign. Peace out.
